KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER - IDEAS that make technology work

Why Microsoft is willing to pay you to search

Have you ever looked under the covers, into the world of Internet searches? Why is there always something about Internet searching or search companies in the news?

It’s not rocket science. The answer is money, and lots of it. That’s why Microsoft is spending a little, with a new Search @ Work campaign, to make a lot.

Search @ Work is promoting Microsoft’s search engine, Live Search. Search @ Work breaks the old revenue-sharing mold in place at Google, Yahoo, AOL and the 400-plus other search engines, by rewarding the end-user rather than the middlemen.

Why? Consider this: In just two or three years, Google’s search engine market share has mushroomed from about 50 percent to more than 80 percent. This at a time when the market is up, but every other search engine has lost market share.
